Class of 99 Mailbag

Well it has been a little while since the last post and there were a lot of people that asked me a lot of questions. Below are some of those questions I got on facebook, email, over the phone and in person. Welcome to the Class of 1999 mailbag.

When and where is the reunion?

It is on the FRIDAY after THANKSGIVING (November 27). This is the only thing set in stone. The location is to be determined.

Where did you get that weird Hurricane picture above?

I looked up "Westhampton Beach High School" on Google to find an image that I could put at the top of this website. Apparently this "mascot" attended the WHB High School Class of 2008 graduation. I didn't believe it was true until I looked in the background and discovered that is indeed our football field and track in the background and I then proceeded to throw up in my mouth. If that remains the WHB mascot, mark my words, I will never donate any money to WHB High School...... oh wait, I probably will never donate any money no matter who the mascot is.

I'm from the Class of 1979. Can you organize our 30 year reunion?

Uhhhhhhhhh, no.

Could we do the reunion in the summer? It seems like more people are around during the summer and not everyone comes back to Long Island for Thanksgiving.

I got this type of question more than any other question (I believe 3 or 4 of you got back to me with this or a similar question). While summer may be nice, I want to share these four points with everyone.

A. Availability of a place to have a reunion - Renting out a spot is much easier in the winter

B. The short timeline between now and the summer is small - If we did a reunion in the summer, it may not give everyone enough time to make travel arrangements and come to the reunion

C. The last two successful reunions were on the Friday after Thanksgiving - Previous classes say this date works and I believe them

D. Most of the people I talked to told me that they would be around the Friday after Thanksgiving - My most important priority is to get as many people to come to the reunion as possible.

So the Friday after Thanksgiving it is. I hope everyone can make it and my apologies for those who cannot.

I'm from the Class of 1998. We didn't have a 10 year reunion. Can you organize our 11 year reunion?

Uhhhhhhhhh, no.

Can we invite teachers that we liked? Not all the boring ones, just the fun ones that people generally enjoyed.

Maybe. If people would like to invite certain teachers, please propose the teacher you would like in the comments section below or email whbclassof99@gmail.com. When I get the names, I will put up a vote to see which teachers (if any) should be invited to the event.

Are you really going to invite the people from the class of 1998 and the class of 2000 to OUR ten year reunion? It sounds like an ok idea but I don't really know all of those people and it will bring in a lot more people than our class thus making the place more busy and potentially making it too crowded to talk to everyone in our class I wanted to talk to.

I thought it might be a neat idea to get several classes together but after seeing the results of the poll on the website, it appears that there are a large portion of people would not like to have all the classes. So we will restrict it to people in our class.

Are you f&%*$# kidding? You are going to invite people from the class of 1998 and 2000??????? I barely liked the people in our own class and now you are going to invite other people I don't like and barely even know.

Ok, ok. I get it. No other classes. Just the Class of 1999 will attend the reunion.

Do we have ANY money in our account from high school that could help subsidize dinner or drinks......(mostly to subsidize drinks)? Maybe the interest earned over the years would allow us to throw an awesome open bar bash with a sushi buffet and go-go dancers.

Well, I called the high school to see what money we had in the coffers and they told me that if there was any money, the President of the Class of 99 would have signed it over to a private account or given it to the Class of 2000. Since I don't remember doing either, I think that we had $0 in the coffers after the prom. Thats what happens when we run two fundraisers (the magazine sale that went to subsidize the prom and the pasta dinner we did that probably lost the class money) in four years. No fundraisers, no money (and thus, no go-go dancers).

Really?????? Casey's????? Can we class it up a little bit?

Sure we can. If people don't like the Casey's idea, we have another option. Danielle Ibba was kind enough to look far and wide for places that would make sense for our class to get together. After contacting many places in the area, she found that Rock Hill Country Club (which has just been newly renovated) would be willing to have us for a buffet, open bar and we could hire a DJ for about $60 per person. So the options break down like this:

Rock Hill Country Club: $60 open bar and a buffet, Dancing and DJ
Casey's (or a similar bar): A small or no cover, Buy your own drinks, No food, Dancing and DJ

There is a poll on the side of this website that will allow you to vote on which option you would prefer. Please take a second to vote on hich one you would like.

So how the hell are you going to get the 200 plus people together for the reunion?

When I asked this question to my father, he told me to put an ad in the Southampton Press, to which I responded, "Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha!" ( I guess I can't fault him for being an old timer).

To get people together, I am trying a number of angles. I have gotten 87 people together in the Facebook page, Dennis Malerba has organized a myspace page, and I may even put something in the Southampton Press (to appease my dad). I have contacted the school (although they have no contact information that they could give to me) and am working on a registration system that will let me know who is interested in coming to the reunion. But the most important way to spread the news is WORD OF MOUTH. Please spread the word.

So if anything, please:

Remember: The reunion will be on the Friday, November 27 (the Friday after Thanksgiving).

Vote: It will take you TWO seconds to vote on what kind of event you want. Dinner and Open bar at Rock Hill or Casey's with a cash bar.

and finally, please

SPREAD THE WORD. I would like to see as many Class of 99ers as possible.

Thanks, Kevin
